ETQW Beta Software Development Kit Revision 2 Released

As promised by jRAD last week, the new revision of the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Beta SDK has just been released and can be downloaded from the mirrors below. This new version fixes most of the issues we discovered in the initial release - a fairly complete list can be found in this blog update.

Enemy Territory QUAKE Wars is GOLD!

Back in 2003, we started exchanging design ideas with id Software for what started out as a fairly modest attempt to evolve the team-play in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. Now, four years later, Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars has officially gone GOLD! For those of you not familiar with the development term, going gold means that the retail game is complete, and that master DVDs have gone to manufacturing, and will then head to stores. This makes us especially proud, not just because of the incredible passion and effort that the development teams have invested these past four years, but especially because of the amazing support the community has given us.

We could never have dreamed that before we had even released the game, we would have had over 100,000 posts on the game's forums, over 80,000 registrants for the Betas, or that we would meet thousands of you in person in London, Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, and Germany on the many ETQW tours and events we've attended.

It is a direct result of your support and the buzz that you've all generated both here, and on more than fifty fan-sites in so many different countries and languages that Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars has won so many awards, but most importantly, has been the subject of more great community feedback on the Betas than I've ever seen at any time with any other game.

Of course this is just the beginning of the next phase – that of the ongoing support for Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars. Our first goal after completing the game's demo (planned for release in mid-September - we're working on that right now) will be to watch closely and address any issues that come up in the first few weeks after the game's release. Next, we'll be putting the polish on the Software Developers Kit, including the Source Code, Level Design Tools and documentation to make sure mod-makers get what they need.

So it is with our deepest gratitude that we'd like to thank all of the community members that have contributed so much to helping us get the game to gold.

The game's retail release is on September the 28th for Europe and Australia, and October the 2nd in North America. We can't wait to see you all on the servers!

Contest: Wheels of War mod for ETQW

There is a mod team developing a carmageddon-mod for ET:QW and they want you to help with car ideas! ...Basically, the team is looking for you to draw a mad-max like vehicle that could end up being used in the carmageddon-like race game mod!
From the site:
What we want to see is those active imaginations run riot. Nothing is too wacky, nothing too over the top. All we need is your idea sketched and sent to us. We will accept models of your ideas too, however we will have to slice them up into our formats anyway - so drawings are preferred.

Designs should be fitting for the Wheels of War world. They should be able to kill whatever has the cheek to look at it in a curious way. Think mean, not-so-green, fighting machines. Add Spikes. Add big metal impact plates. We like big wheels! If you think you cannot draw, Domipheus will be uploading a simple example of a vehicle he wants to see; it will comfort you like a mug of hot chocolate - with cream if you are into that sort of thing.

The winner will be awarded several accolades:

* The vehicle will be added to the Wheels of War vehicle selection
* Naming of the vehicle will be left to the winner
* The winner will be added to the Mod credits as a designer
* They will receive a high quality print of their vehicle in-game

The closing date is the 17th September 2007.

At long last, we are delighted to confirm the impending Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta. The ETQW Closed Beta has been going extremely well and yielding excellent results. We want to give more people the opportunity to give us feedback on the game so we’re going to open a Public Beta with 60,000 slots available. This way we’ll be able to test many more combinations of hardware, RAM, CPU, graphics card, drivers etc. than we’ve been able to ourselves, and also get a better idea of how the game plays for the general gaming public.

The Public Beta build will consist of a single map named “Sewer”, which is part of ETQW’s Pacific Campaign. Set in Japan, the map revolves around a Strogg base hidden in, well, a sewer. It’s an interesting mix of outdoor and indoor, vehicle and infantry combat, deployables and counter-deployables and good old-fashioned FPS combat.

If you’d like to help us finish ETQW, we’d really appreciate your participation. If you want to just play a game for free you may find it a frustrating experience. This Public Beta is not the Demo - it’s not the finished game, but an opportunity to get feedback from a large group of people while testing stability and performance on a wider range of hardware combinations. The Public Beta will also collect some information on your hardware configuration, so you shouldn’t apply unless you’re comfortable with that.

When the Public Beta opens, participants will be sent their unique license code that is required for play. As we don’t have the infrastructure necessary to download tens of thousands of clients, we’ve asked FilePlanet to help us distribute these license codes along with the beta clients.

A fixed number of beta slots are being set aside for Fileplanet subscribers, so if you already have a FilePlanet subscription, you’re in the front of the queue. The rest of the slots will then go to those with free FilePlanet accounts. To be clear: You don’t have to pay anyone anything to participate in the ETQW Public Beta. It’s up to you if you want to pay FilePlanet for use of the improved download services they provide.

Sound Design Toolkit Vol 1 Now Available

Sonic Valley Prouductions, The sound design team that brought big sound to mods such as Iron Grip, The Hidden and Desert Conflict and currently working on Hard Rain, Obsidian Edge 2 and No More Room In Hell are pleased to present a new tool for the mod community. The Sound Design Toolkit Vol 1 is a collection of almost 100 sound fx recorded and created by the SVP team for mappers and modders to use freely without any obligation in their projects.

"Often we have alot of audio that we create that never sees the light of day in our projects" says Sonic Valley General Manager Hermann Rauth, "So we decided a while back to take some of those samples and put them together in a collection. It's our way of not wasting alot of hard work and creates an oppurtunity for us to give something to the mod community, which is one of our main help out mods."

However alot of the audio has been specially recorded for this collection such as Aircraft like F18 bombing runs, Military jet take offs and landings from F15's and the C17 Globemaster as well as a nice radial engine stunt plane. Other sounds include weapons like Anti tank, Sniper Rifles, Sub Machine Guns, Whizbys, Explosions, Tanks and much more.

Starbase map - beta release

Starbase is a map that takes ET into a new dimension. Allies are preparing an ion cannon which aims at annihilating
axis forces and end the war. Axis board the Allied Starbase with a battleship with only one objective: take the
starbase off orbit.

The first section of the map is a fight to establish a forward spawn position. Axis have 2 entrances to breach in
order to reach a central room where they can build the spawn. The fight then becomes indoors, with loads of new
features: teleporters, energy barriers, sci-fi styled ammo racks...

This map is at a BETA testing stage, meaning there is still quite a bit of work to do on the map to improve it. Any ideas, suggestions, bug reporting are more than welcome on the forums. The main point we would like to focus on with this public beta release is map balance. Indeed, we didn t add any buildable defenses for allies yet because we don t know how the map will play in public.

A great thanks to all those who helped in testing this map, and to Burniole and Kennie for the hours they spent testing this map over and over. The command map was made by Burniole and Chris has made the space fighter ships brushwork

2007-03-25 : Starbase - Taking ET to the starsby Marko
The new Starbase map is close to being tested. In this new map, Axis attack an allied star base via an interstellar battleship. Most of the textures, sounds and shaders are not ET-native.
